AI needs power and cooling. In orbit there is sun almost all the time and the cold of space. That is why SpaceX, Google and several startups are designing satellites that are, in practice, flying server racks.
"AI1" compute satellites: about 120 kW sustained and 150 kW peak each (June 2026 design), with Nvidia Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs, solar power and radiators to shed heat. Prototypes planned for 2027. It asked the FCC for up to one million satellites.
Announced November 4, 2025: two prototype satellites with TPU chips, built with Planet, targeting a 2027 launch. Ground tests measure radiation, vibration and heat rejection.
Rocket Lab launched silicon solar arrays aimed at orbital data centers (Feb 26, 2026). Redwire offers roll-out solar arrays and signed an MOU with Sophia Space for orbital compute.
Google estimates it all hinges on launch cost: it could fall below $200 per kilogram by the mid-2030s thanks to reusable rockets.
